HammondCare’s Arts on Prescription Program
|
Changing Lives Through Art
HammondCare’s Art on Prescription program helps people over the age of 65 explore their creativity and learn new skills in a range of artistic forms from painting, visual arts, theatre, photography, music, writing and dance. The prescribed program runs for eight weeks at a time and is targeted towards those living at home with unmet health and wellness needs. Experienced artists work with small groups to help participants explore their own creativity and learn new skills.
There is no cost to attend these programs within the HammondCare’s Centre for Positive Ageing at Hammondville and HammondCare North Turramurra. However, the program needs continued support to expand for many others to experience the positive impact. Donate now to help make Arts on Prescription available to all. 2nd Africa Region Conference of Gerontology and Geriatrics

 The International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG) will be hosting the 2nd Africa Region Conference of Gerontology and Geriatrics from6-8 December 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The theme of the conference — Long-Term Care Systems for Africa: Setting Agendas — centers on the need to develop effective and appropriate systems in place of the current long-term care arrangements for older adults in sub-Saharan Africa.
The conference aims to be a platform for dialogue to generate agendas and roadmaps for collaborative action to inform strategies for implementing long-term systems of care for Africans in coming decades.

National Institute on Ageing «Rethinking Ageing» Conference

Save the Date, 24-25 November 2016
 The National Institute on Ageing will bring together delegates to learn, share and brainstorm the key actions for advancing the pillars of the National Seniors Strategy (NSS) in Canada released on October 2015. On 24 November 2016, themes will focus on independent, active and engaged citizens as well as ensuring healthy and active lives. On 25 November 2016, themes will focus on person-centred, high quality and integrated care closer to home and associated support for caregivers.
There will also be opportunities to submit innovative ideas, products and initiatives for inclusion in the Conference Idea Bank.

As the fourth conference in the Open Space: People Space Series, keynote speakers include Professor Billie Giles-Corti (Australia), Professor Gloria Gutman (Canada) and Professor Sarah Wigglesworth (UK).
In addition to plenary, parallel and poster sessions, delegates will hear from the Mobility, Mood and Place (MMP) project team who will share emerging findings from three years of research engaging over 750 older participants in innovative studies, including co-design, mobile neural imaging and lifecourse work.

Age-Friendly Western Australia Workshop

On 28 June 2016, the Age-Friendly Western Australia Workshop brought together 100 representatives from State and local governments, universities and community service organisations to share information on key issues affecting the Western Australian ageing population and to develop collaborative strategic responses to ageing. As an initiative of the Age-Friendly Interagency Group (AFIG) and facilitated by Dr Jane Barratt, Secretary General of the IFA, this workshop is one of several initiatives undertaken by the National Government to prioritize the needs of the ageing population.
«To date, half of Western Australia’s local governments have received State Government funding to establish age-friendly communities,» stated Seniors and Volunteering Minister Hon Tony Simpson at the opening of the event. «This means 75 per cent of our seniors are now living in a local government area that has investigated what policies, services and structures seniors need, to age well.»

Independence and Choice As We Age

Canadians strongly agree that independence is important yet many cases of well-intentioned efforts to help friends and family may actually be hindering these older adults from maintaining the independence they desire.
«Ageism is getting old! Every person, young or old, can live life with purpose,» says 95-year old former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, now Chief Elder Officer at Revera and Chancellor of Sheridan College. «This purpose doesn’t end when you get older; society must recognize that older people can and want to continue to make a contribution, and this begins with tackling ageism.»

ILC India International Training Programme on
«Social Gerontology»

As the United Nations’ International Institute on Ageing (UN INIA) Malta Satellite Centre for the SAARC region, the International Longevity Centre India (ILC-I) held an international training programme on «Social Gerontology» in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences from 11-15 April 2016 in Mumbai, India.
This multi-disciplinary training programme aimed to provide a broad and up-to-date understanding of the complex consequences and challenges of population ageing. Participants were oriented to help evolve and implement appropriate policies, programmes and interventions to ensure a healthy quality of life for older adults.
The programme was attended by medical doctors, professors, research scholars, professionals working in retirement communities or old age homes, senior citizens, and international participants from Nepal.

IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing in the News!

The IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing convened from 21-23 June 2016 in Brisbane, Australia. The Queensland Seniors Newspaper has chronicled many of the conference outcomes found under the World Ageing Conference hub page, from keynote profiles to video interviews of many speakers and delegates to updates from each of the conference days. The conference welcomed delegates from all over the world, and featured thought provoking discussions and sessions on a wide range of ageing issues including age-friendly environments, innovations in aged care, adult vaccination, ageism, equality and prevention of abuse. Attendance included many inspiring speakers such as Dr John Beard of the World Health Organization, Dr Raina MacIntyre of the University of New South Wales and Dr Bradley Willcox of the University of Hawaii.

Which Australian State Leads the Age-friendly Stakes?

Dr John Beard of the World Health Organization announced Australia’s most age-friendly states, New South Wales and Victoria, at the IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing in Brisbane this month.
In turn, Queensland Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke also used the conference to announce its first steps in building more age-friendly communities by releasing the state’s first age-friendly communities action plan including 79 actions to be delivered over four years at a cost of $8.3 million.
«This plan has set the platform for a whole government vision to create a community in which older people are valued, respected and have every opportunity to be involved,» Ms O’Rourke said. «By adopting this attitude we are ensuring our communities are a better place to live — for everyone.»

Unvaccinated Aged Care Workers: A Risk to Older Adults

Experts in Australia are worried that sick healthcare workers are inadvertently spreading illness during the flu season.
Since 2014, there have been more than 180 flu outbreaks in aged care homes in New South Wales alone. While other immunisations such as Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis are mandatory, the flu shot is not, resulting in only half of healthcare workers being vaccinated.
Professor Robert Booy from the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance suggests that the flu shot is compulsory for people working in aged care homes. «It’s the staff who can spread infection from one person to another,» Professor Booy said. «Each outbreak can lead to deaths, even the closure of a nursing home.»
