A Message from the Secretary General

On behalf of the IFA, its Board of Directors and staff, I am pleased to present you with the first edition of the IFA Skim.  One of two communication platforms replacing the IFA eNews, designed to keep our readership and members representing NGOs, the corporate sector, academia, government and individuals informed about important up-to-date global ageing news. The IFA Skim will be sent out mid-month.

The IFA Skim will update you on upcoming conferences, reports, initiatives, accomplishments and general news in the ageing sector.  The IFA will also profile some of our member initiatives in the IFA Skim to create knowledge mobilizations opportunities across sectors and disciplines, strengthening partnerships globally. It is important to the IFA that your work is known and recognized.

Finally, I would like to wish all our members and readers the very best for the 2015 year and keep an eye out at the end of the month for IFA VoltAGE.

Outreach 
Deadline for Abstract submissions has been EXTENDED to 30 January, 2015 for oral and poster presentations. Abstracts must relate to one of the 12 sub-themes.

News 
The 2015 Ageing Report: Underlying Assumptions and Projection Methodologies Report

The European Commission has released this new report
providing a description of underlying macroeconomic assumptions and methodologies of the age-related expenditure projections for all Member States; covering pensions, health care, long-term care, education and unemployment benefits.
This Counterclockwise study conducted by Professor Langer demonstrated that the biomedical model of the day — that the mind and body are on separate tracks — was wrongheaded.

In Autumn 2013, Friends of the Elderly approached theFuture Foundation to pursue an original programme of qualitative research, historic data analysis, and forecasting to build upon existing body of research into loneliness of older adults in the UK.

By 2020, people 55 years and older will make up approximately 25 percent of the workforce in North America.  The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found through a survey they conducted that organizations are unprepared for an ageing workforce, with just one-third of organizations examining policies and practices to address the demographic change.

Initiative
The Cyril & Dorothy, Joel & Jill Reitman Centre for Alzheimer’s Support and Training are hosting a play on Friday, January 23rd, 2015 at 2:30 pm, Toronto, Ontario, entitled «Cracked: a new light on dementia.»
This play is an innovative research-based theatre production that casts a critical light on society’s one-dimensional view of dementia as an unmitigated tragedy.  This play intends to inspire alternative ways of seeing people with dementia, demonstrates the importance of maintaining strong relationships with them and reinforce the imperative for good ethical care.
