 As part of the IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing, the IFA and COTA Queensland, in collaboration with the WHO, are pleased to announce the inclusion of a specific track on Age-friendly Cities and Communities. This will be the global opportunity in 2015 — 2016 to share policy, program and practices with colleagues from across the globe and to help build a sustainable knowledge mobilization network.

Population ageing and the associated demand for diminishing health and social care services is a phenomenon being experienced by many governments around the world today. At the heart of a life course approach to ageing is the critical importance of adult vaccinations as part of the investment in healthy ageing.
«Adult Vaccinations as part of Healthy Ageing»was a plenary session at the recent IAGG-ER Congress in Dublin. In a European study the goal of 75% uptake rate of the pneumococcal vaccine equates to 3.8 million less cases of pneumonia, 97,000 less hospitalisations, and 51,500 less deaths.
The IFA is calling for action to improve professional and public education, address inequalities related to cost and reimbursement and develop consistence and appropriate standards and guidelines.

 Key messages and preliminary results from the Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Barometer Study thus far highlights the need not only for greater awareness and education around diabetic vision loss for adults living with diabetes, but also for decision and policy-makers. Preliminary results suggest a need to develop policies and practices towards overcoming significant barriers around and the improvement of standards of care.
The study shows direct and indirect costs for eye care, which include prevention, transportation, wait times, treatments and follow ups.
With the help of health care practitioners and adults with diabetes as participants in this survey, the relevance of this data and key messages can be more fully realized.
Completing and/or disseminating this survey is a contribution to creating a national voice advocating for the awareness of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema and the need for global action.

 In May 2015, the IFA in collaboration with Grantmakers in Aging (GIA) is convening a webinar, entitled «Walking the AFCC Talk», focusing on good practice in the form of case studies.
The IFA is seeking Expressions of Interest from cities and communities who have case studies to share and discuss through a global reach.

| Introducing Dr. Bradley Willcox, Keynote Speaker at the IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing
 Dr. Bradley Willcox is Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Geriatric Medicine at John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. He is the Principal Investigator of the NIH-fund Kuakini Hawaii LIFESPAN and HEALTHSPAN studies and Co-Principal Investigator of the Okinawa Centenarian Study.
Dr. Willcox is the author of the NY Times best-selling book on healthy ageing, «The Okinawa Program.» He is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and a three-time nominee for Outstanding Physician of the Year at the Queen’s Medical Center. His work has appeared in cover articles of Times Magazine, National Geographic, and on Oprah, Good Morning America, NOVA Science, BBC, among other media.

 The Global Think Tank on Ageing (11 — 13 October 2015) is the key driver in the development of the program for the high level knowledge exchange of governmental officials and industry leaders to be held on 17 — 19 April 2016 known as the IFA Copenhagen Summit.
The goal of these connected meetings is to contribute new evidence-based thinking to the development of ageing policy as it relates to improved capacity and capability of older people.
With population ageing there is an inevitable pressure on health and social care systems. Reablement is an individualized process of short-term, intensive assistance to develop and restore functional abilities in daily living skills that is being explored during these IFA events.
The theme groups of dementia, diabetes and frailty have been selected as representative of a person’s function, care and accommodation needs in the community, with technology as a cross cutting theme. Preparatory papers on reablement in the context of dementia, diabetes and frailty are currently being produced to provide background knowledge for the IFA Global Think Tank.

 Dr. Shah is a renowned Gastroenterologist, associated with many prominent hospitals. He is a highly accomplished physician, teacher of medicine at BJMC, Pune University and has been the honorary physician to the Governor of Maharashtra for the last 30 years. Dr. Shah is the founder/chairman of the Janaseva Foundation, which was founded in January 1988. The Janaseva Foundation is involved in activities mainly around health care, older adult care, people with disabilities and research on rural ageing. The Janaseva Foundation has been accredited by the United Nations for the past 3 years and has regularly attended OEWGA meetings. The Foundation, under Dr. Shah’s guidance, arranged the National Seminar on Active & Healthy Aging in collaboration with the WHO — SEARO in Pune, India.

9 mois a l’IFA
Depuis le mois d’août dernier, j’ai eu lachance de faire partie du Secrétariat General de l’International Federation on Ageing. Après avoir suivi en France durant deux ans des cours liés aux problématiques sociales, économiques et internationales de notre siècle, faire un stage au sein d’une Organisation Non-Gouvernementale Internationale (ONGI) incarnait une grande opportunité pour moi.
Pendant 9 mois, j’ai été immergé dans un environnement dynamique et multiculturel. Ce stage a représenté une première expérience professionnelle à la fois enrichissante et stimulante. J’ai dû notamment relever le défi de travailler, communiquer et d’interagir en Anglais.
Ce stage m’a aussi sensibilisé sur les enjeux soulevés par le vieillissement de la population mondiale. J’ai ainsi pu en apprendre davantage sur des thèmes aussi nombreux et variés tels que le rapport entre personnes âgées et technologies, l’après-2015 agenda des Nations Unies ou les projets portés par des villes amies des ainés.
