Did you know that diabetes and its associated complications is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness? Were you also aware that, globally, a large percentage of people with diabetes don’t know about this devastating complication and/or do not have access to the necessary treatments?
The IFA, IAPB and IDF, through a global study across 42 countries, are looking to gain information to help change the answers to these questions around awareness, access to screening and treatments and levels of education.
We need help from health providers working in the field of diabetes, patient organizations and/or adults with diabetes.

How to Make Your City More Age-Friendly!
 Are you an Age-friendly City or Community (AFCC) just starting off, working on a project that is stuck or are interested in helping your initiative progress?
If you answered YES, then you are in luck! The IFA, in collaboration with Grantmakers In Aging, is putting on the first of three webinars, in March 2015, that will address decision-makers within an AFCC environment how to engage.
This webinar will address optimal language use, sustainability, models for successful engagement and will leave you with tools to help inform AFCC initiatives.
Don’t miss out on this webinar, that will help you understand the politics of a community and how to manoeuvre and negotiate through various systems in developing a successful AFCC project.

Eliminating the ‘Burden to Society’ Stigma
What if there was an option for an older person close to you to continue living a full life taking into consideration changes in function.
Did you know that rehabilitation such as technology applications and devices are one of the most effective ways to maintain and improve the capacity of an individual facing major physical or cognitive changes?
Older people are often considered a burden to society because their contribution is either overlooked or hindered by limitations in activities of daily living.
The International Federation on Ageing together with DaneAge are trying to change this ageist attitude by convening an expert meeting of academics and practitioners on the subject of rehabilitation and older people in October 2015. This Global Think Tank on Ageing is a forum of enquiry where invited expert leaders will come together to discuss and debate the key questions around the emerging field of rehabilitation and ageing. The outcomes of this forum will be used to structure the annual international platform known as the IFA Copenhagen Summit in April 2016.
Conditions such as dementia, diabetes, and frailty can be debilitating — but they don’t have to be!

 Sixty-five percent of older adults were victims of the Japanese Tsunami in 2011 and about one-half of the victims in Hurricane Sandy, 2012. Emergency relief in times of crisis target the most vulnerable, yet older adults tend not to receive special consideration. COTA Queensland and the IFA invites authors who work in the disaster and/or other ageing fields to submit abstracts. The IFA is pleased to announce that the newest issue of the Global Ageing: Issues and Action Journal is now available to members! This issue, entitled «Adult Vaccinations and the Health of Older Workers» focuses on the critical need for action to promote a life-course approach to immunization in order for older adults to remain healthy, significant social and economic contributors within their societies.

My involvement in the IFA stretches back six years ago when in May 2008 and for the first time, I attended an IFA Board Meeting and a Workshop on Ageing in Beijing, China. In September of the same year I participated in the IFA 9th Global Conference on Ageing in Montreal, Canada.
It was then I learned some glaring facts; that populations around the world are rapidly ageing, but that regions and countries vary in the timing and speed of the ageing process. Also, the gap continues to widen between developed nations and the developing world.
As the Vice President of Friends of IFA (FOIFA), Japan, I was directly involved in a team that organized the International Forum on Ageing in Place and Age-friendly Cities in Akita City, Japan (October 2009) and the International Workshop on Ageing and Healthy Environments in Yaoundé, Cameroon (May 2013). These events were very successful in responding to the IFA strategic directions and provided a positive image of the IFA as a significant contributor to issues around ageing in the regions and beyond. Over the past few years, I have seen the IFA grow with a ‘new look’ launching its new logo in Melbourne in 2010, maintaining a stable and growing membership, and increasing visibility through its global conferences.
To that, I acknowledge the work of the IFA Secretariat which has a strong team of staff led by Dr. Jane Barratt and Mr. Greg Shaw. It is a privilege for me to serve on the Board made up of visionary leaders of different backgrounds and from different parts of the world. I acknowledge the commitment of the IFA Board in the pursuit of IFA goals and objectives. As a member on the Board, I plan on working together with other Directors, partners and members in developing creative ideas that would and hopefully support the work of the IFA.
To continue achieving more success in its work as a global connector, the IFA needs the full commitment of its directors and its network of members worldwide.
